Diana Takes a Bite of Pumpkin

October does strange things to people. Despite its availability during all other 11 months of the year, as soon as the calendar hits October 1st, everything turns pumpkin. Pumpkin invades bread, pancakes, lattes, ravioli, ice cream, cupcakes, etc., and people go mad for the stuff.

While I am typically resistent to jumping on any band wagon, I can't help but smile when Starbucks starts posting signage for their popular pumpkin lattes. Maybe it's because eating pumpkin is my adult self's way of celebrating a holiday that no longer belongs to me, or maybe it's because pumpkin actually tastes really good, but I find the whole seasonal pumpkin-obsession amusing rather than irritating.

As a tribute to the month of the pumpkin, here is my list of partially tested/partially un-tested purveyors and sources for the funky orange vegetable.

Pumpkin butter! Much like apple butter, but...well, you know! I've seen it at Trader Joe's and other gourmet food stores. It's tasty on toast!

I have a DIY pumpkin post. Everyday Food published a recipe for pumpkin chocolate chip squares. The recipe is available at: http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/pumpkin-chocolate-chip-squares?autonomy_kw=pumpkin%20chocolate%20chip%20squares&rsc=header_1

I even make it my own by subbing out some of the white flour for whole wheat pastry flour and making it in muffin tins (1) for portion control and 2) cutting the squares loses too much of them).
